Turkeys Needed - SOS Community Services
When:
Immediately
The SOS food program does an extra distribution of frozen turkeys each year before Thanksgiving Day. Hundreds of people line up and wait for hours for a chance to get a turkey. Last year 400 people showed up. For the first time, despite generous supporters, we ran out and had to turn many away empty-handed. How you can help:
- Donate frozen turkeys and drop them off at the SOS Crisis Center (114 N. River St., Ypsilanti) on November 17th.
- Donations of $15 gift cards to Meijers or Kroger, or cash gifts to SOS Community Services
Please send or drop off monetary or gift cards to SOS Community Services, Inc., 101 S. Huron St., Ypsilanti, MI 48197, open 9-5pm, Monday-Friday.
Your cash gift qualifies for the Michigan Tax Credit for Homeless Shelters & Food Banks for a 50% credit up to $200. Even better, SOS will receive a dollar match for every two dollars given from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan in support of emergency food and shelter programs. A $20 gift may only cost you $10 after taxes and mean $30 in food.
If you can contribute turkeys, gift cards, or money, let us know right away! Contact Chelsea Clark (chelseac@soscs.org) 734-484-9900 for more information.
Silent Auction to Benefit Lucy
When: Nov 14 from 4-8 p.m.
In August, Lucy Kramp, a member of Lord of Light Lutheran Church (LOL), was diagnosed with Progressive Familial Interhepatic Cholestatis Type 2 (PFIC-2), a rare genetic condition that results in liver failure. The only treatment for this condition is a liver transplant. Nine days shy of her first birthday on September 22nd, Lucy received that gift of life. On October 8th, she was released from Mott Children’s Hospital to go home where she continues to recover and regain her strength.
Fortunately, Lucy’s family has good health insurance. However, even good insurance involves significant co-pays and other expenses. Lucy’s parents have both been off work, balancing care for their daughter with that of her big brother, Robbie, since the end of August. As a result, their income has been significantly reduced even as their expenses have increased.
In order to assist the Kramp family during this time of financial stress, LOL will be hosting a dinner and silent auction on Sunday, November 14, from 4-8PM at Lord of Light, 801 S. Forest (@ Hill), Ann Arbor. Various forms of assistance are needed – from folks who can help with logistics to those who can donate items for the auction and, of course, people who can come, enjoy a good meal and entertainment and bid on items in the auction.
Interested individuals are invited to join: ThanksgivingforLucy@yahoogroups.com. All funds raised will be matched by the Washtenaw Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Those who wish to make direct financial contributions are welcome to do so; checks may be made payable to LOL and marked “Lucy” on the memo line. Questions? Please call: 734.668.7622. Thank you.
Ongoing Opportunity
Volunteers Needed - Prepare Meals at Peace Neighborhood Center
When:
First Thursday of each month
Who we need: Four volunteers for each month
An outreach opportunity is now available to Zion members being organized by Marianne Rauer and Mary Pfaus which will allow Zion members to assist Peace Neighborhood Center (PNC). PNC provides an after-school program, which includes meals prepared and served to school aged children in the program. Zion's participation would be preparing and serving the meal. Total time commitment is 2-3 hours. The menu is planned and the food is available for preparation. PNC director, Bonnie Billups, is excited about Zion's participation in this program. Four volunteers are needed for the first Thursday of each month, and both women and men are welcome. Sign-up sheets are available on Sundays in the Welcome Center and in the church office during the week. For more information, contact Marianne Rauer or Mary Pfaus.
