Adult Discipleship at Zion

Growing one's faith through worship, study and service is not something that happens by accident. It's a process, one that has to be cultivated and sustained. With that in mind, Zion offers a year-round schedule of classes, community groups, ministries and special events, all intended to support your faith journey, help you engage with the world in meaningful ways, and deepen your relationship with Christ and your fellow Christians.

"Zion is not a sit-in-the-pew kind of church. We want people to feel genuinely excited
about being Christians and to be actively engaged with the wider community.
Through adult discipleship, we offer a variety of opportunities for members and
visitors to grow their faith, live their faith and make that faith matter."

-- Christine Carlsen, Director of Adult Discipleship Ministries

New Member Classes

If you're interested in becoming part of Zion, orientation classes are the place to start. Offered on a quarterly basis (January, April, June, and September) and taught by Pastor Mike, these 3 sessions -- each approximately 90 minutes in length -- will introduce you to core Lutheran beliefs. They’ll also provide you with an overview of ministry opportunities at Zion and encourage you to enter into relationship with Jesus Christ and fellow believers. Lutherans transferring their membership to Zion are also invited to attend these orientation sessions. For specific dates and detailed information, contact the Church Office.

Adult Classes

"The forbidden books of the Bible", "Meeting God in Prayer", "What About Hell?", and "Women of the Old Testament." These are just a sampling of the many fascinating courses offered on Sundays and, occasionally, during weekday evenings. Topics range from Bible study to family issues to recent movements and trends within the Christian church.  Most courses are 6 weeks long, and all classes are presented in a setting that encourages community, intellectual learning and spiritual growth. Even if you can’t attend every session, you're welcome to come when you can. For a list of current topics, visit the Adult Classes page.

Community Groups

One of the most powerful -- and enjoyable -- ways to grow your faith and form Christian friendships is by participating in a small group. Currently, there are more than three dozen active community groups, with new ones forming constantly. Groups meet regularly to study the Bible, pray together, share their lives and offer service to others. For more information, contact Christine Carlsen ().

Prayer Ministries

Prayer Chain - if you've ever been prayed for during times of personal crisis, you know how powerful it can be. By joining Zion's Prayer Chain, you can be part of the amazing process of surrounding others with prayer. Each Monday, prayer requests from the congregation will be sent to you via e-mail or telephone. No experience necessary -- just a desire to pray for others. Joining the Prayer Chain is as easy as calling the Church Office at 734-994-4455.

Healing Prayer - For over 2,000 years, Christians have used prayer as a means for emotional, spiritual and physical healing. This ministry will prepare you to serve as a pray-er during special healing services held throughout the year. To learn more, contact Chris Carlsen or Dan McConnell.

Prayer Enrichment

At retreats and prayer sessions, you'll have the opportunity to experience a variety of prayer practices designed to draw you closer to God and increase your awareness of God's presence in your life. Check this web site periodically for announcements of upcoming prayer enrichment programs.

Retreats and Camps

Every year, Zion offers a variety of retreat experiences for men, women, couples and families. Varying in length from a few hours to several days, retreats provide a rare opportunity to get away from it all, create a spiritual space, and concentrate on one’s faith and relationships. For a list of upcoming retreats, contact Christine Carlsen.

Special Events

Occasionally, Zion hosts large-scale events for the congregation and/or for Christian churches throughout the region. Past events have included a weekend conference on spiritual healing, a Giving in Deed and Need Fair showcasing nonprofits throughout southeastern Michigan, and a traveling exhibition of the Bible-inspired art of internationally renowned painter and lithographer, Dr. He Qi. Volunteers are always needed for planning and on-site support. To learn about upcoming events, contact Christine Carlsen.
